Todra Gorge to Merzouga: Best Stops on the Desert Road

Green palm oasis of Todgha with the Todra Gorge mountains behind, southern Morocco

The road from Todra Gorge to Merzouga is the last stretch of the classic journey from Marrakech to the Sahara. Many travellers see it only as a long drive before the dunes. In fact, this road from Todra Gorge to Merzouga passes palm oases, ancient irrigation channels, fossil workshops and one of the oldest market towns in the south. After 20 years of driving it with our guests, here are the stops we never skip.

The route at a glance

The usual route follows the N10 east from Tinghir to Tinejdad, then continues to Erfoud, Rissani and finally Merzouga, at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

  • Distance: roughly 200 km from Todra Gorge to Merzouga.
  • Driving time: around 4 hours without stops. With visits and lunch, plan most of the day.
  • Road: paved all the way, with long straight sections across the desert plains.

The goal is simple: leave Todra Gorge in the morning and arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, in time for a sunset camel ride.

1. Start early in Todra Gorge

Begin with a morning walk in Todra Gorge, when the light is soft and the tour groups have not arrived yet. The canyon walls rise around 300 metres above a narrow stream, and the shade keeps it cool even on warm days. Thirty to sixty minutes is enough to walk the narrowest part and take photos.

2. The Tinghir palm grove viewpoint

As you drive back down toward Tinghir, stop at one of the viewpoints above the oasis. A long green ribbon of palm trees follows the river, with old earthen villages on both sides and bare mountains all around. It is one of the best places to understand how life in southern Morocco depends on water.

3. Tinejdad and life in the oasis

Tinejdad is a quiet oasis town surrounded by palm gardens and old ksour, the fortified earthen villages of the south. Several ksour and small local museums here show how families lived, stored food and shared water in the desert. It is a good place to stretch your legs and see traditional earth architecture up close.

4. The khettaras: underground water channels

Between Tinejdad and Erfoud, look out for long lines of round mounds crossing the desert. These are khettaras, an ancient system of underground channels that carry water from the mountains to the oases using only gravity. Some families open sections to visitors, where you can walk down inside and learn how the system was dug and maintained by hand.

5. Erfoud: fossils and dates

Erfoud is famous for two things: fossils and dates. Millions of years ago, this part of the Sahara was under the sea, and the rocks are full of ammonites, trilobites and other marine fossils. In the workshops, you can watch craftsmen cut and polish fossil stone into tables, sinks and small souvenirs.

Erfoud is also surrounded by date palms. In autumn, during the harvest, the markets are full of different varieties to taste.

Erfoud is a good place to fill the fuel tank and withdraw cash, as there are few services between here and the dunes. Read our guide to money in Morocco for ATM tips.

6. Rissani: the old capital of the Tafilalet

Rissani lies at the heart of the Tafilalet, the large oasis region where the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco's ruling family, has its roots. The town grew as a stop on the old caravan routes between the Sahara and the north.

  • The souk: on market days, farmers and nomads from the region come to buy and sell dates, spices, livestock and everyday goods. Ask your driver which days the market is on during your visit.
  • The mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif: an important religious site honouring the ancestor of the Alaouite dynasty. Visitors can admire the entrance and gardens; respect the rules for non-Muslim visitors.
  • Medfouna: try this local speciality, often called "Berber pizza": bread stuffed with meat, onions and spices, baked in a wood oven.

7. Arrival in Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi

After Rissani, the road continues south and the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon, glowing orange in the afternoon light. Plan to arrive in Merzouga one to two hours before sunset, so you have time to settle in before your camel ride to the desert camp.

An alternative route via Alnif

Some travellers take a more southern road from Tinghir through Alnif to Rissani. It is quieter, with wide desert landscapes and an area known for trilobite fossils. It can also be used on the way back from Merzouga, to make a loop instead of driving the same road twice. Ask us which route fits your plans best.
