Chefchaouen is beautiful at any hour, but a Chefchaouen sunset is something special. As the sun drops behind the Rif Mountains, the blue walls turn soft violet, the call to prayer rises from the medina, and the first lights appear across the hillside. Most day-trippers leave before this moment. Here is where to watch it, when to go, and how to plan your visit so you do not miss it.
Why sunset is the best time in the Blue City
During the day, the medina is busy with visitors taking photos in the famous blue lanes. By late afternoon, many tour buses head back to Fes or Tangier, and the town becomes calm again. The light gets warmer, the shadows get longer, and the blue walls glow.
The hour after sunset, often called the blue hour, is just as beautiful. The sky and the houses share the same deep blue, and the medina lights start to sparkle. If you stay overnight, you get both.
1. The Spanish Mosque: the classic Chefchaouen sunset viewpoint
The most famous place to watch the Chefchaouen sunset is the hillside of the Spanish Mosque, known locally as the Bouzafar Mosque. This white mosque was built in the 1920s, during the Spanish protectorate. It is no longer used for prayer and is usually closed, but the open terrace beside it gives a wide view over the whole medina and the mountains behind.
How to get there:
- Leave the medina through Bab el Ansar, the eastern gate.
- Walk to Ras El Maa, the spring where the town gets its water.
- Cross the small bridge and follow the clear path up the hillside.
- The walk takes about 20 to 30 minutes at a steady pace.
The path is easy for most people, but it climbs all the way and can be hot in summer. If the terrace is busy, walk a little further along the hillside for a quieter spot with almost the same view.
2. Rooftop terraces around Outa el Hammam
If you prefer not to climb, the rooftop terraces of cafés, restaurants and riads around Outa el Hammam, the main square, are a relaxed alternative. You see the red walls of the Kasbah, the octagonal minaret of the Great Mosque and the blue houses climbing the hill.
Order a mint tea, sit back and watch the light change. Many riads in the medina also have their own terraces, so ask your host if guests can go up at sunset.
3. The Kasbah tower for golden afternoon light
The 15th-century Kasbah on Outa el Hammam square has a garden, a small ethnographic museum and a tower with a lovely view over the rooftops. There is a small entrance fee.
The Kasbah usually closes in the early evening and may close for a break around midday, so it is better for golden afternoon light than for the sunset itself. Check the opening hours locally on the day.
4. Ras El Maa for the blue hour
After watching the sunset from the hillside, stop at Ras El Maa on your way down. The sound of the water, the small cafés along the stream and the lights coming on in the medina make it a peaceful place to end the evening.
When to go: timing your Chefchaouen sunset
Sunset time changes a lot through the year, from late afternoon in winter to late evening in summer. Check the exact time on your phone on the day, then use this simple plan:
- Leave the medina 45 to 60 minutes before sunset if you are walking to the Spanish Mosque.
- Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to find a good spot and enjoy the golden light.
- Stay 15 to 20 minutes after sunset for the blue hour, when the town lights up.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) usually bring clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Winter can be cool and rainy in the Rif, and summer afternoons can be hot, so bring water. Read more in our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
Day trip or overnight stay?
Chefchaouen is about 3.5 to 4 hours by road from Fes and about 2 to 2.5 hours from Tangier. On a day trip, you usually have to leave in the afternoon, before sunset, to arrive back at a reasonable hour.
That is why we always recommend at least one night in Chefchaouen. You can enjoy the sunset without rushing, explore the quiet lanes in the early morning before the crowds arrive, and travel on rested. It fits easily into our Morocco tours from Fes and Morocco tours from Tangier.
Practical tips for your Chefchaouen sunset
- Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for the hillside path.
- Bring water, and a light jacket for the evening, especially outside summer.
- Use your phone torch for the walk down after dark, and walk back with others.
- Carry a little cash for a mint tea at Ras El Maa or on a rooftop terrace.
- Ask before photographing local people, and respect their homes in the residential lanes.
- Some people on the path may offer to guide you. A polite "no, thank you" is enough, as the path is easy to follow.
- For photos, shoot the medina with the mountains behind it, and keep shooting after sunset when the lights come on.
