Overview

This 10-day Morocco tour from Casablanca is the most complete private itinerary available — one seamless route connecting imperial cities, ancient Roman ruins, Sahara dunes, sculpted mountain valleys, and a windswept Atlantic shoreline.

Your journey begins in Casablanca before winding north to Meknes and the Roman archaeological site of Volubilis. You then enter Fes, Morocco’s spiritual heart, where a licensed local guide leads you deep into one of the world’s best-preserved medieval cities. From Fes, the road crosses the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, descends through the otherworldly Ziz Valley, and delivers you to the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga — where a desert camp and camel trek beneath the Saharan stars await.

The return leg is equally rich: Rissani’s ancient market, the towering walls of Todra Gorges, the rose-scented Dades Valley, the cinematic kasbahs of Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, and the High Atlas pass of Tizi n’Tichka, before the final descent into Marrakech. A full guided day explores the Red City, and the tour closes with a day trip to Essaouira — breezy, blue-shuttered, and utterly unhurried — before your transfer to the airport.

Every day brings a completely different Morocco. This is the tour that shows you all of it.

Tour Highlights

Itinerary

Your driver meets you at Casablanca airport and transfers you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon is free to walk the Hassan II Mosque esplanade, follow the Corniche promenade along the Atlantic, or simply settle into the rhythm of Morocco’s largest and most modern city.

Overnight in Casablanca.

After breakfast, head northeast to Meknes, the imperial city built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. Its monumental Bab Mansour gate, vast granaries, and royal stables speak to an era of extraordinary ambition. Continue a few kilometres to Volubilis, Morocco’s best-preserved Roman archaeological site — a hilltop city of triumphal arches, mosaic floors, and marble columns that once marked the empire’s southernmost frontier.

Late afternoon arrival in Fes for check-in at your riad or hotel.

Overnight in Fes.

Fes el-Bali is the largest living medieval city on earth, and a single afternoon barely scratches its surface. Today, a licensed local guide takes you into its 9,000 alleyways at the right pace. The morning focuses on the artisan quarters: the Nejjarine Fountain, the woodworkers’ souk, the brass-beaters’ lane, and the unmistakable Chouara Tannery viewed from a leather merchant’s terrace above.

In the afternoon, walk to the Moulay Idriss Mausoleum precinct, the exterior of Al Quaraouiyine — founded in 859 and widely considered the world’s oldest continuously operating university — then out to Fes Jdid and the gilded Royal Palace gates. The day closes at a panoramic viewpoint over the entire terracotta sea of rooftops.

Overnight in Fes.

An early departure takes you south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Stop in Ifrane — a startlingly European town of red-roofed chalets set among cedar and oak forests where Barbary macaques roam freely — before continuing through the highland landscapes of Midelt.

The afternoon brings a dramatic shift in scenery: the road drops into the Ziz Valley, a long palm-lined gorge threading between ochre cliffs and mud-brick villages before opening onto the pre-Saharan plains around Erfoud. By late afternoon, the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

Overnight at a desert hotel near the dunes in Merzouga.

The morning is unhurried — ideal for sunrise photography at the dune’s edge or a walk into the quieter eastern reaches of the erg. In the late afternoon, transfer to the camel checkpoint to begin your Erg Chebbi camel trek, riding in single file into the dunes as the light turns the sand from gold to amber to copper. A 4×4 transfer is available for guests who prefer it.

Your Berber-style desert camp sits in a natural bowl between the dunes. Dinner is served around a fire with traditional music, and the night sky above the Sahara — far from any city light — is among the most arresting sights on the entire tour.

Overnight in the Merzouga desert camp.

Wake before dawn to watch sunrise from the top of a dune, then return to camp for breakfast. Depart through Rissani, the ancient market town and birthplace of the Alaouite dynasty that has ruled Morocco since the 17th century. Its Monday, Thursday, and Sunday souk is one of the most authentic in southern Morocco.

Continue west through Tinghir to the Todra Gorges: a narrow canyon where 300-metre limestone walls close in to just 10 metres apart, with the Todra River threading between them. After time to walk the canyon floor, the road follows the palm-lined Dades River to Dades Valley, famed for its eroded rock towers, kasbahs perched on ridgelines, and spring roses stretching as far as the eye can see.

Overnight in Dades Valley.

The morning route through the Valley of Roses and the market town of Kalaat M’Gouna leads to Ouarzazate, the self-styled gateway to the Sahara and Morocco’s film production capital. The studios here have hosted Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and dozens more. A brief stop at the Atlas Studios is optional.

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar whose towers and earthen ramparts have appeared in more films and television productions than any location in Africa. Explore the labyrinthine interiors before crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m) — a winding road of hairpins and high-altitude panoramas — and descending into the warmth of the Marrakech basin.

Overnight in Marrakech.

Marrakech rewards exploration at ground level, and your licensed local guide ensures you see it properly. The morning begins at Jemaa el-Fna, the UNESCO-recognised square that transforms from a fruit-juice market by day to an open-air theatre of storytellers, musicians, and food vendors by night. From there, navigate the covered souks — metalwork, spices, carpets, leather — before visiting Bahia Palace, the 19th-century masterpiece of carved cedar and painted stucco.

The afternoon is yours: Koutoubia Mosque and its gardens, the tranquil Saadian Tombs, the French-designed Gueliz neighbourhood, or the vivid electric blue of Majorelle Garden. The evening is free to experience Marrakech’s legendary rooftop terrace culture and Jemaa el-Fna after dark.

Overnight in Marrakech.

A two-and-a-half-hour drive west brings you to Morocco’s most atmospheric coastal city. Essaouira — known to Berbers as Tassourt, beloved by Jimi Hendrix, and listed by UNESCO for its 18th-century Portuguese-influenced medina — exists at a pace entirely its own. Walk the Skala de la Kasbah ramparts above the crashing Atlantic, weave through the blue-and-white medina alleyways, watch the wooden boat builders at the fishing port, and browse the galleries of Gnawa art and thuya woodwork that line Rue Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah.

Return to Marrakech in the early evening for your final night.

Frequently Asked Questions

This private tour runs for 10 days and 9 nights. It departs from Casablanca and follows a complete circuit through Fes, the Sahara Desert, Dades Valley, Marrakech, and Essaouira before ending at your chosen airport.

Yes. The itinerary includes one night in a traditional Berber-style desert camp in Merzouga, near the Erg Chebbi dunes. A sunset camel trek is included, with the option of a 4×4 transfer for guests who prefer it.

Yes — this route was designed with first-time visitors in mind. It combines every major category of Moroccan experience in a single logical journey: imperial cities, Roman history, mountain landscapes, desert, kasbahs, a UNESCO coastal medina, and Morocco’s most celebrated city.

Absolutely. The final day transfer can be arranged to either Marrakech Menara Airport or Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, depending on your flight schedule. Just let us know when booking.

The most comfortable months are March to May and September to November, when temperatures are pleasant across all regions including the desert. Winter (December to February) works well for the imperial cities and coast, with cooler but manageable desert conditions. Summer is possible but expect extreme heat in the Sahara and southern valleys.

The pace is comfortable and adaptable. The camel trek is approximately 1–1.5 hours and can be replaced by a 4×4 at any time. Walking in the medinas of Fes and Marrakech involves uneven surfaces and some moderate distances, but nothing that requires athletic fitness.
